Scaling digital solutions like ambient scribes safely across the country

Case study Digizo.nu
December 15, 2025

Digizo.nu is an initiative aiming to drive digital transformation across Dutch healthcare, from telehealth to digital triage, to innovative AI solutions that reduce administrative burden. One of their recent focus areas is ambient listening technology, a promising development that streamlines clinical documentation and supports healthcare professionals in their daily work.

As these AI solutions expand beyond hospital settings into diverse healthcare domains, critical questions emerge: which solutions are safe and ready to scale? And how do we even assess them for responsible scaling?

That is where Romion Health stepped in to help Digizo.nu.

Why we collaborated

Among other AI tools, ambient listening solutions is one that is particularly rapidly entering the doctor's consultation room lately. However, as with any medical technology, it is not always clear in these beginning phases what the added value of the solutions is. Also, with many new companies entering the market the question is which of these companies are mature enough and ready to scale.

Driving the responsible adoption of AI is what is at our core, so a perfect match to support Digizo.nu in their journey on scaling digital technologies responsibly. In this rapidly evolving field, our role was to bring structure, critical reflection, and transparency, helping all stakeholders understand what responsible scaling requires.

"Romion Health helped us think differently, about the process, the questions we ask, and even how we build our assessment and reports."
— Tonko Wedda, Teamlead assessments, Digizo.nu

What we worked on

Digizo.nu's process exists out of several phases. Romion's support has been focused on Assessing available digital applications and Evaluation based on the available scientific evidence.

As part of the Assessment Team, (AI-)vendors are requested to answer an extensive list of questions for the assessment team to gain a better understanding of the vendor's and solution's readiness to scale. This is complemented by a meeting in which answers are discussed and appraised. As Romion Health, we fulfill the role of experts on AI and compliance, providing a critical view on these topics and constructive feedback for points of improvement.

As part of the Evaluation Team for AI scribes specifically, we

  • Mapped on technical, user and patient level how clinical workflows change because of ambient listening tools
  • Helped establish evaluation metrics for ambient listening
  • Reviewed scientific literature based on the evaluation metrics and analyzed evidence gaps to understand real-world impact

What we achieved

A transparent assessment process was created, offering clear and well-documented answers to critical questions across all stakeholder groups. This process supported a gradual shift in mindset - from traditional digital health evaluation toward frameworks that better fit AI-driven solutions. The guidance provided helped stakeholders develop a shared understanding of technical and organizational readiness among AI vendors.

Throughout the work, we paid close attention to the debate on whether ambient listening tools qualify as medical devices, ensuring that the intended purpose remained focused solely on administrative use. To support sector-wide relevance, tailored workflow designs were developed for implementation across different areas of healthcare, always grounded in practical clinical experience.

"Romion Health is one of the few who focuses solely on healthcare AI - independent, sharp, and close to the field."
— Tonko Wedda, Teamlead assessments, Digizo.nu

What comes next

After having established the groundwork, we continue to assess ambient scribes, but also many other digital solutions for and with Digizo.nu to ensure we scale AI in the Netherlands responsibly; for future-proof care.
